Lee Harvey Oswald had an obsession for being famous and historical. He even labeled his diary, "Historic Diary".
Nothing he had tried up until then (defecting to Russia, returning, trying to assassinate General Walker, trying to start a Fair Play for Cuba branch with more than just him in it...), worked.
Then he read in the paper that President Kennedy would be driven past his place of work...
I don't think he had anything that much against the President, but being famous meant more.
Oswald wanted to be famous and historical, and nothing else he had tried, worked.

We'll never know for absolutely certain why Oswald did it, the above is just the best we can do with our knowledge of him. Lee Harvey Oswald was assassinated himself two days later. We know that he had communist sympathies and had tried to legally renounce his US Citizenship.
There are some people who suggest conspiracy theories - for example, that Oswald was part of a plot to kill the President, whether it was by the USSR, the Mafia, Cuba, Kennedy's political rivals or even his Vice President (and successor) Lyndon Johnson. Some of the wildest theories go further and say that Oswald was framed.
There are all kinds of conspiracy theories but the whole truth may never be known. The most recent theory that I've heard is that Kennedy's policies did not did not please the Illuminati so they had him murdered. This would be more believable if the *real* Illuminati had not broken up in 1784!
It may have been as simple as Lee Harvey Oswald was a disgruntled nut.
Some honestly seem to think the most logical answer would be the fact that Mr. Kennedy would not sign off on Operation Northwoods. Operation Northwoods was a "false flag" operation which was designed by members of the United States military. Some even think, without any evidence of course, the CIA used Oswald as a Manchurian Candidate to carry out the assassination. They think the government has an unlimited and perfect capacity to keep secrets!
Some say JFK was killed because he was attempting to undermine the Federal Reserve and get the American dollar back onto the gold standard, which means that the dollar bill could be exchanged at a bank for actual gold. This act would undermine the Federal Reserve. There is no reason to think that Oswald cared about any of this, any more than Booth cared about the banking of Lincoln.
There is no evidence that Oswald knew or cared about Operation Northwoods, and still less evidence that Oswald or anyone else has *ever* been turned into a Manchurian Candidate. The human brain is simply too complex for even the techniques that might be available today, to do it. Conspiracy theorists will say, "but they used drugs!" but somehow are never able to name them, the dosage, etc. as no such drugs are known and proven to actually exist.
This is somewhat similar to how the conspiracy "theorists" claim that HAARP, an auroral research project with tours for the public, is the government's "magic wand" to do evil with... create earthquakes and tsunamis and the like. How auroras can be controlled into causing earthquakes, is never explained by them. I put the word "theorists" in quotation marks because theories have evidence. They are in fact hypothesizing, not theorizing, because hypotheses need no evidence-- they are just notions thrown out.
No-one knows for sure, as Lee Harvey Oswald himself was assassinated two days later. The most likely reason was that Oswald was mentally unstable, and he had been known to have Communist sympathies. Of course, plenty of people believe there may have been a conspiracy or plot behind the incident, usually based on the idea that there was more than one gunman at the scene. These theories may variously include the USSR, subversive Communists, Fidel Castro, the Mafia, the FBI, Kennedy's political rivals or even his Vice President (and successor) Lyndon B. Johnson.
