Most of Stalin's popularity comes from his regime's victory over the Germans in World War II. World War II is known as the Great Patriotic War in Russia.

Stalin was a dictator before World War II occured. Hitler and Stalin were allies until the situation backfired. Stalin begged for mercy. Most of Russia was taken over by the German Army. The Americans, Russians, Africans, and British formed a group called the Allies. The Germans were called the Axis. We fought and fought until, eventually Germany took control of Moscow, Russia, France, Northern Africa, Poland, and many other countries. A British radio announces," The Battle of France is now over, The Battle of Britain, is about to begin! Stalin was a fine man. Though he killed millions, he worked hard to win independence for Russia. We are currently Allies with Russia, still. However, when the Cold War was declared, we were NOT allies with the USSR. We fought them. Correct me if I'm wrong anyone. But do NOT delete anything that I have written!

Thank you very much.

He was, according to polls, more liked than disliked.

Although this is true, opinions usually held no middle ground. You either very much supported Stalin or you very much didn't support him.
