TR was a proponent of national greatness rather than that of individual states, which suited the Republican Platform nicely. In his time, the Democrats were still associated with the south and with the Rebel cause in the Civil War; TR was from New York, a Union state.

Which one? Theodore ("Teddy" or "TR"), leader of the Charge up San Juan Hill was in the Republican party, while Franklin Delano, President from 1932 to 1945, was a Democrat. Teddy Roosevelt is the only American president to have coined an advertising slogan - he came up with "Good to the last drop" while drinking coffee at the Maxwell House hotel in, if I remember, Tennessee.
