There are several reasons why they died. When they landed they chose the worst area to settle and build a fort. The James River was a bad source for water because it was swampy and would back up. Disease took many of the 104 men within 6 months and the men didn't come to settle the land but look for gold and fortunes and didn't plant crops. If the 14,000 Native Americans living there had wanted them out all they had to do is attack the fort, but they didn't do that for over 20 years after the first men arrived. The Jamestown colony made many bad decisions and it cost them lives.
because the London investors expected a quick profit from their colony, the settlers searched for gold and silver when they should of been growing food. in addition, disease and hunger took a huge toll on the colonists.
Many of the troubles of the Jamestown settlement, including starvation, was because they really were not organized. Believing in what they were told in England, they would only work when they were ordered to by the London Company, for they were considered employees of the company. Moreover, the settlers believed that the company would keep them supplied. Therefore, no one saw any need to plant crops. To do such a stupid thing, when the winter time came, many died of starvation.
Having the knowledge that early colonists in Jamestown died, shows that there indeed was a cost, and also there were trials to the establishing of the settlement of Jamestown. if you were in history, and they didn't teach that there were trials in the development of Jamestown, it wouldn't be able to quite fully explain why certain things took place. in fact, certain things wouldn't have taken place if it weren't for these events.
Jamestown diminished in the winter of starvation and of freezing to death
Jamestown also died from the polluted water and droughts.
They landed during a heavy drought year and obtained their drinking water from the river, which during the drought was quite brackish, making them very ill.
Inadequate food and water. Overcrowding. This took its toll and disease spread throughout the many colonists. Typhoid fever and malaria also contributed.
Lack of food and diseases
because many people are not working
There were a couple causes for why the people of Jamestown left. The main reasons were strained relationships with the local Native Americans, drought, and a host of several diseases carried by mosquitoes and caused by poor water and other items that caused colonists to starve and die.
because when the Jamestown people came and settled they had more people come they started pushing people off their land
