Aircraft and vessels of the Imperial Japanese Navy attacked parts of the US Navy stationed in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii on December 7, 1941. The battle was a decisive Japanese victory, and much of the US fleet was crippled in one fell swoop. Casualties were lopsided, as about 2,400 American servicemen lost their lives, while the Japanese suffered only about 90 casualties.
The attack was largely believed to be unprovoked. Japanese diplomats were meant to deliver a manifesto in Washington DC prior to the attack, but confusions over time zones caused them to deliver the manifesto a few hours after the attack began. Thus, it appeared that the USA was the victim of an unprovoked and deliberately malicious attack.
The American people were outraged by this act of war, and on December 8, 1941, Congress unanimously (with the exception of one representative, Jeannette Rankin of Montana) decided to declare war on Japan
