They were made for various reasons. They were centers of worship and looked to as places of comfort in times of trial and tribulation. The populace often looked to them as a symbol of the grandeur of their God. However, politically speaking, a spirit of one-upmanship sometimes was present. Sometimes political leaders sought to build a bigger, better cathedral than their neighbor.
I think they were built to make us all feel insignificant. The palaces were built to make the King significant and all powerfull.....and the same for the church and the cathedrals. They cost a lot of money when most people scraped a living .I think 35\40 was old age in those days,But now the,re there we can see that they are magnificent buildings. Built by men and horses and little measurement skills. Just hard graft. The buildings still stand today a monument to the skills and craft of the masons and carpenters, and labourers. who built them and the architects who designed them They,re still standing.

The difference is tha a castle is a fortified buliding ir serios of bulidings desined to withstand enemy attacks and sieges. And a palace is a lesure buliding, decined to maximize the comfort of its inabitants, and impress the vistors.

In those times the people were ruled by monarchs with an extreme amount of power over them. Kings and Lords strongly believed in deities (such as the Christian God). They wanted to show their 'divine power' (given to them by 'God') by building extraordinary structures such as cathedrals and castles. It was required for the monarch to prove himself. He did this by building grand structures like cathedrals and castles. If a King built an amazing cathedral, he was very 'divine'. The place of worship had to be 'grand'. Castles were also built for protection against enemies, and comfort for the King.
