Yes.

And Hitler built on some 1500 years of hatred and anti-semitism propagated by the Christian church.

The Jews were not simple scapegoats. In Mein Kampf Hitler states that "as long as there is a single Jew alive in the world, Germany cannot succeed at anything she attempts". Therefore by that reasoning all Jews had to be exterminated because they were preventing German success, simply because of the fact they were Jews. It was to be total 100% genocide.

Hitler and the Nazis used Jews as scapegoats in order to become elected.

The Nazis needed a platform to get public support; as many Germans were perturbed by the influx of Jewish refugees escaping persecution in Poland, it was a political issue that they could unite the people on. Jewish persecution was one issue at the heart of Nazi ideology, stemming from the blame that the Nazis gave the Jews for the German surrender of WWI, another issue that the German public did not like. It was easy for the Nazis to place the blame for all of Germany's ills on the Jews and to promote the idea that Germany would be better off without the Jews.
