That's a good question, especially since compared to current US taxes the colonists were really getting an extremely good bargain (Democrats not having been invented yet). Even compared to those living in Britain they were being let off easy.
One of the problems was that the tax had to be paid in "coin of the realm" ... i.e. British currency, which wasn't all that common in the colonies; most colonists used whatever coins they could get their hands on (Dutch, Portuguese, Spanish, etc.) supplemented by barter to handle their everyday transactions.
