Why would you need an independent insurance agent?

You don't, if you are an expert in every available company in your area, you know which companies will underwrite what, you know their rates, you know their claims process, and you would rather deal with their customer service department yourself than speak with a local agent.

The only difference between having an agent and not having an agent is you have an additional service representative that deals with you outside the insurance company that can help with issues, and they work for you without an additional fee. They do not work "for free", because a commission is paid to them by the insurance company, and that cost is built into the rate that you are charged for the insurance (the premium that you pay is a function of the "rate").

Insurance companies for health or life insurance are selling their products through agents at the exact same rates they offer directly, you will not save any money by going directly to the carrier, but you'll lose extra support and advice you could have obtained from an agent. Furthermore, by having a relationship with an independent agent, rather than dealing directly with an insurer that may be a "direct writer", you will have the opportunity for a licensed and regulated person to learn your circumstances, make insurance recommendations, and because he/she is regulated by the insurance regulatory authority of your State, you have the potential of regulatory recourse of the agent commits an offense that is contrary to the State's insurance law governing his/her behavior, or the fiduciary relationship with you.

Also keep in mind that there is a difference between truly independent agents (often called "brokers") and a captive agent who only writes for one or a couple of companies. The former will generally have a wider variety of companies and products from which to choose and to meet your financial needs.

What is a insurance agent?

Its someone you hire to spy on insurance companies to make sure that you get the best spagetti strainer possible An insurance agent is more accurantely refered to as a "consultant or and advisor". This is because a good agent should "advise" you on the best insurance products need based on your needs? This is done through an needs analysis of a clients needs. A personal suggestion is that you seek our an independent agent. This is because, independent agent generally has contracts with several insurance companies and thereby works for the client not the company? Finally, a good insurance advisor once obtained is an advisor for life. Able to assist with all your insurance needs. I would suggest finding an advisor that has an full service insurance agency.
