Templates give you an outline that simplifies the formatting of your document. Font format, sizing, placement, etc can all be set through templates. Learning how to modify your templates can be extremely useful in education-- You can set up a template that automatically lays out the formatting of research papers, letters, and other such documents so that these things are done for you at a single click!

They already have some of the structure and layout built in so that you have some of the work already completed. This saves you time and you can work on the pieces that need to be done. The rest of the document is standard. A template is often based on a standard format that does not change, like a memo or a report or a cover sheet for a fax. All the user needs to do is work on the parts that are different and leave the standard bits as they are without having to recreate them all the time.

In a template, a lot of the work is already done. The standard elements are already on the page before you start, instead of starting from a blank page. By doing that you can concentrate on the specific elements, like the message in a memo or data for an invoice. When you use the same template all the time, then the standard elements all look the same, so you have consistency in your different documents. So you can get more documents done in a shorter time and all of the documents look a standard format.
