Answer (maybe)

"Microsoft Office 2000, Microsoft Office XP, Microsoft Office 2003, and the 2007 Microsoft Office suites are all supported on Windows Vista."

...

"Because Office 2000 and Office XP are in Extended Support, there have been no fixes for issues that occur when these products are run on Windows Vista."

So...my interpretation is that you can get the usual security patches until the end of extended support (2011 for OXP). But if something breaks under Vista, you're out of luck.

There is a particular problem with Outlook XP under Vista (or Windows 7); because of changes in the Windows security system, Outlook XP is unable to save account passwords when running under Vista. So every time you run Outlook, you have to enter the account password.

AnswerYes. You can check the compatibility of any program with that of Windows Vista by finding the "Application Compatibilty Tool/Wizard" in the Microsoft web site.

I myself have Office XP Pro on my Vista machine. It should work fine. When it comes the version of Vista you have, it doesn't matter.

Yes it is compatiable and works fine. I use Office 2000

depends on the computer there is a vist upgrade advisor on the Microsoft webpage

If you have the RAM, I would assume vista since it would be more up to date, unfortunately a lot of people stick with XP due to the RAM issue. XP was better; unfortunately it is no longer available with new machines - except for some low-end laptops. However, Microsoft have said that they will still support XP via Windows Update until 13 July 2010 (provided that Service Pack 2 is installed), by which time Windows 7, which will supersede Vista and will be launched later this year, will be shipping with new machines. Whether this in turn will be better than XP remains to be seen.

I got the news today that service will continue up to 2014 and that HP will install windows XP on their computers, optionnaly.

herebelow is the brief (from Tom's guide Hebdo, in French) :

Windows 7 ne tuera pas XP

Le 07/04/2009 17h40, dans PC portables Windows XP disparaitra-t-il un jour ? On dirait en tout cas qu'il repousse les limites de sa retraite puisque HP vient d'annoncer qu'il continuera à le proposer en option avec ses futures machines installées en Windows 7.Support prolongé jusqu'en 2014 Lire la suite
I definitely would go with VISTA, it is faster, and easier. If your looking to buy a new PC, go with VISTA. Xp lags to much and can't run as many programs.
There are two schools of thought on the matter. Some say that Windows XP is superior due to its speed, reliability, and it is still supported by Microsoft. Others say that Visa is better because it has more modern features, and future software will support Vista longer than XP.
