Goldfish cannot live properly in a 5 gallon tank. Goldfish need 20 gallons for the first fish, and 10 gallons per additional fish after.
It's not simply about their size potential, which is big, but the fact that they produce a lot of waste.
Guppies and goldfish are not compatible as they have different water needs.

∙ 15y agoMy goldfish lived in a 5 gallon tank until he got 5" long, then we moved him to a 10 gallon. i see no reason why they can't live in a 5 gallon as long as the fish isn't too big. If you're putting multiple fish in the tank, then overpopulation is why they would die. Make sure you keep the water clean and don't put in tap water unless it's been sitting for a few days. Chlorine is bad for fish. Hope this helps!

∙ 14y agoIt is nowhere near big enough. The basic rules of successfull fishkeeping are :- 1 inch of fish needs at least 1 gallon of water. (a Goldfish is a 10 inch fish). Every tank must have a permanently running cycled filter. :- Every tank must have at least 50% of its water replaced every week. So, if you do the sums right (3 x 10 gallons) you will see that in order to keep 3 goldfish sucessfully you will need at least 30 gallons of water.

∙ 11y agoGoldfish can survive just fine in tap water. As long as your water is safe for you to drink, you can use it for your goldfish. You just need to use water conditioner that you can buy at a pet store to add per the recommended dosage on the bottle when you do water changes.

Wouldn't recommend putting a goldfish in a 5 gallon tank-regardless of what type or size of goldfish. This is because the goldfish would be stunted causing it to have an untimely death. The condition in which a goldfish is "stunted" is where the fish adjusts to its tiny environment so much as to stop growing. The fish will stop growing on the outside but will continue to grow on the inside. Goldfish are naturally messy and create a LOT of waste. This factor would cause the tanks water to be poluted which inturn could kill not only the goldfish but possible your mollies too :(. Two mollies is enough for a five gallon tank. If you truly want to get a goldfish you will have to house the goldfish in a 10-20 gallon tank with very good filtration
