I don't think you can go back and try for more money. The reality is, that if you cannot afford to live in the house, that you need somewhere cheaper to live. If your house is in good shape, you might consider renting it for more than the cost of the mortgage (If the market will bear that price) while you live somewhere you can afford and hope for better days to come. Otherwise, you will need to try to sell it and then find Section 8 housing.
