The common reasons for this are stress or poor water conditions causing fin rot.
To cure it you should use fin rot medicine, if it has tufts of cotton wool type threads hanging from it it could even be a fungal infection.
Get your water tested at your local aquatic store or buy a test kit that checks aquarium ammonia, nitrites and nitrates so you can work out the cause.
Most illness in fish are due to water chemistry.
Consider joining a Betta or General tropical fish forum and ask for help, people will usually do their best to help you get your fish healthy again and help you figure the possible cause so you can prevent it from happening again.
