i have a model 125u19 payne furnace i move the thermostat but nothing comes on in the furnace and the pilot light is lit

Sounds like you might have a blown transformer, or a blown fuse on the transformer. Hope for the fuse. Its on the Furnace. Be sure your white wire is on the heat side of the thermostat, and the red wire is on the correct terminal also. The transformer can be checked with a voltmeter.

When you say the furnace is still running, I take that to mean the fan and not the actual flame portion of the furnace. If this is correct, you either have a fan relay that is sticking closed or your tstat is bad. == == == == There may be a very slight time delay the the thermostat before turning off the furnace, but if you are sure that you have turned the thermostat off and the fire continues to burn, you have a serious problem. Have it checked out. The gas valve may be sticking in the open position. Regards
How do you start a 1979 gmc vandura furnace?
I have a Frontier Campervan conversion on this vehicle type and can answer for that. 1) Turn on the propane at the tank. 2) Take the front panel off the furnace by pulling the top straight out then lifting. 3) Turn the propane on at the furnace by rotating the red knob 1/2 turn to the ON position. 4) Replace the furnace cover. 5) The wall thermostat has an ON/OFF switch on the bottom. Click it to the ON (right) position. 6) Adjust the temperature using the top slider on the thermostat. The thermostat should first start the blower then, after a few seconds, start the igniter. I can easily hear the igniter 'tick' as it sparks. That's all there should be to it.
