If your bankruptcy was "discharged" in 2000, then yes. Discharged means it is done! If you are still in a chapter 13 bankruptcy, still paying the trustee--then no. If the trustee finds out about the CD, it will cause lot of problems.

Will filing chapter 13 bankruptcy affect a recent joint bank account?

If you have filed for bankruptcy as an individual, rather than as a couple, then you are only filing on your personal debts. Following this logic, only those funds that are yours (so your share of the bank account, if that is possible) will be "up for grabs." Your bankruptcy status should not have an effect on your partner.

Does a personal bankruptcy eliminate a personal guaranty on business debt?

Yes. I filed for that reason alone. I signed a lease for a business. I was told I had to sign a personal guarantee. I had to file a personal BK because of it. When I left the lease they tried to sue the business....but the business had nothing, so they came after me because I signed a personal guarantee. I filed a Bankruptcy and it was discharged.

According to bankruptcy laws, how long must one wait after filing bankruptcy before they can buy on credit again?

Bankruptcy laws do not prohibit a person from opening another credit account. However, it may be difficult to find a bank willing to extend credit to someone who has filed bankruptcy. In addition, consumers should be careful not to repeat past mistakes. Once bankruptcy has been filed, it is a good idea to operate on a cash basis to re-learn the essentials of personal finance.

Can a creditor put a hold on your savings account after you claim bankruptcy?

When you file for bankruptcy, all your assets are revealed to the trustee and basically frozen. No, a creditor probably won't put a hold on your savings account after you file but they can until your bankruptcy is discharged. Usually a letter from your attorney saying you have filed bankruptcy will stop this action.
