Many of the first colonials to settle in America in the 1600's were from what is now known as the United Kingdom, and thus they spoke English, from which "American English" stems from.

The Pilgrims all ready knew English since they were English. The Native Americans learned from them and most likely taught them a few of their words.
"Some present Hawaiians know English. Some know the Hawaiian language." I would be willing to bet that most Hawaiians know English and some know both English and Hawaiian. They've been Americans since 1959, geez, and most of them probably knew English way before you did. Why would you even ask that? At least they are American citizens. Maybe you should ask "how many Hispanic Americans ever learn English?"
Well Americans do speak English. Some are taught the US version of it. Though basically the same as British English some spelling and rules of grammar differ slightly.

Read Mark Twain and other American authors. Associate with cultured Americans. Do not try to learn it from people on television or the radio - they generally do not speak well.

Over time, they were able to teach and learn from each other, leading to improved communication and cooperation.
Some Chinese Americans speak and learn a little of the Chinese language, but others just speak English as their first language. As being Chinese American myself, I say that I had to learn Chinese from my parents and Chinese school, while balancing those skills learning at normal schools (like talking English, instead of Chinese).
