(Latin: Ram) In astronomy, the constellation lying between Pisces and Taurus; in astrology, the first sign of the zodiac, governing approximately the period March 21April 19. It is represented by a ram, which is sometimes identified with the Egyptian god Amon. In Greek mythology Aries was identified with the ram that carried the prince Phrixus out of Thessaly to Colchis. Phrixus sacrificed the ram to Zeus, who placed it in the heavens as a constellation. Its golden fleece was later recovered by Jason.

The Ram, in astronomy, a zodiacal and autumnal constellation (see illustration). Among the 12 zodiacal constellations, Aries was considered as the first, because about 2000 years ago when the zodiacal constellations were organized, the Sun was in Aries where it crossed the equator at vernal equinox. Today, because of the precession of the equinoxes, this reference point has moved into the constellation Pisces. However, Aries remains the first sign of the zodiac. See also Constellation.

Translation software from HP that runs on Itanium computers. It allows PA-RISC applications originally written for HP 9000 computers to run natively on Itanium computers running HP's Unix (HP-UX) operating system. Aries provides a way to run legacy applications "as is" before they can be recompiled into native Itanium programs.

Aries interprets PA-RISC instructions one at a time until it finds a code block that is executed a certain number of times. It then converts that code block into native IA-64 instructions and executes the native block the next time it is required. When the program is closed, the IA-64 code is discarded. See Itanium.

Aries (âr'ēz) [Lat.,=the ram], constellation lying on the ecliptic (the sun's apparent path through the heavens) between Taurus and Pisces; it is one of the constellations of the zodiac. It contains the bright star Hamal (Alpha Arietis). About 2,000 years ago the vernal equinox was located at the beginning of Aries and was thus also called the "first point of Aries"; however, the precession of the equinoxes has since shifted the vernal equinox into Pisces. Aries reaches its highest point in the evening sky in December.
