Most have a retaining clip atached to the back of the knob that can be removed with a screw driver.
Here is the instruction:
1:Block the front wheels with wheel chocks for safety. Set the parking brake and move the shift knob all the way down. Turn the ignition off and remove the key.
2:Pull the leather shift cover down to access the small clip at the front of the shift knob (it's not necessary to pull it all the way down--only an inch or two).
3:Grasp the clip with a pair of pliers. Pull it forward to remove it from the shift knob.
4:Grasp the shift knob. Pull it straight up to remove it from the shift assembly.
To remove the window knob, you need to purchase a tool at any auto parts store, you would then slide the tool behind the window crank and simply push out the clip that holds the window lever in place.
Remove the inside door panel or cover and look inside the area where window is concealed and turn the manual window knob. If no problem is detected, check through the car's other window. Use open-end wrenches or a socket wrench to replace worn or broken parts or tighten loose nuts and bolts.
First remove the shift knob pattern (it can be pried out with a small screw driver). Next remove the alignment pin with a pair of pliers. Then the shift knob can be unscrewed.
pull down on the boot exposing the plastic bracket .if you look in the front closest to the stereo you will find a little metal retaining pin simply pry it out and slide off shift knob. then follow instructions for installing new shift knob
The Haynes manual says to pull up on the knob "sharply" to remove it. That's pretty funny stuff. I've never tried to remove one but if all you have to do is pull up on it I would think that after all these years it'll be a bear to get off by pulling on it. I suppose you have some interesting reason for wanting to remove this?
For a manual transmission it unscrews counter-clockwise.

pull the shift boot down. loosen the jam nut under the shift knob then unscrew the shift knob.
The shifter knob has a horseshoe shaped clip that can be pryed out with a small flathead screw driver. Once removed, the knob will pull off.
Automatic or manual.. That's a broad question
remove arm rest screws, remove window crank handle( using small hook pull clip behind handle toward knob), remove door lock knob, remove door handle frame, using flat screwdriver wrapped in tape and starting at the bottom of the door gently pry the trim panel away from the door ( plastic clips are tough sometimes) and work around till all are out, lift panel off door.
