The Spanish Civil War was primarily an internal war. The two sides were the fascists and a coalition of republicans, socialists, royalist, communists, and others.

Many adventurous people from Great Britain, France, the United States, Hungary, Romania, and several other countries joined to fight for the republican side. These were called the 'international brigades.' The Soviet Union did not send soldiers but supplied more than 800 airplanes and some tanks and artillery pieces.

Nazi Germany supported the fascists and supplied them with airplanes and other tools of war. Italy and Portugal both also supported the fascists. The Germans supplied 600 airplanes, plus hundreds of tanks and about 1000 artillery pieces. The Germans also sent military advisers, pilots, and combat troops, with 12,000 Germans in Spain at one point.

Both sides made promises to the Basque and Catalonian populations, most of which were not kept.

The war was very even for a while but the fascists gained an advantage and the republicans collapsed. The war lasted 3 years and was extremely destructive. 300,000 or more died, of which about 120,000 were civilians massacred or executed for support of one side or the other.
