No, they don't hurt unless you put them in incorrectly. You might want to use the ones with plastic applicators since they go in easier. You might not want to use a regular store brand if they are uncomfortable when they expand. Playtex is a good brand. All tampons come with a helpful instruction sheet explaining how to use them. Try to go with cotton if you can... it's better for you, but not by much since most tampons are composed of polyester. If the tampon is kind of dry when you try to insert it, put some intimate lubricant on the tip of it. Depending on how heavy your flow is you should start with the smallest size possible and try to limit super to overnight use ONLY.

All the stuff people say about Toxic shock syndrome is true. Some women have used them for 20 years and NEVER had a problem. There is such a risk of getting it, but you shouldn't be overly scared.

But, try to go back and forth between tampons and pads... whatever works best for you. both have their downfalls. Tampons are great during the summertime because they don't emit any odor because they are inside of you and cannot be seen while wearing a skirt or bathing suit. Not to worry, they generally cannot "disappear" inside you because there is a string from the outside of you connected to the tampon that you pull to remove it.

But, if it still hurts.... wait a little bit before using them, you may still be too slender and since your body will continue to change try them in 3 months or so. In that case, use a pad instead. Pads were used a long time before tampons ever came along.

TSS is caused when certain naturally-occuring bacteria overgrow and start to produce TSST-1 toxins that enter the body, if a person lacks immunity the toxins overwhelm the immune system leading to something similar to septic shock and can be fatal - TSS is rare but effects 1 in 700 women, and younger women are at far higher risk.

Pre-teens and teens are at higher risk because they're less likely to have developed antibodies to TSST-1 toxins, statistically speaking younger women are alos often less informed of safer choices to make an educated decision on what sanitary products to use, and often don't follow precautions to reduce risks.

At your age tampon risks like Toxic Shock Syndrome are higher - this is a real risk, the fact other people can use tampons without contracting TSS does not magically mean that tampons do not still pose health risks including TSS. If you do use tampons be sure to use cotton tampons such as Cottons, Natracare, or Maxim instead of rayon tampons like Playtex, Kotex, or Tampax which pose higher risks - also use lubrication but do not use Vaseline as this is unsafe when used in the vagina. Be sure you understand risks and follow precautions to reduce your risks when using tampons.
