In the medieval period, before the Enlightenment and the creation of Natural Rights, a person only had what privileges were extended to him from the rulers and did not have the ability to claim that because he was a human being that he was entitled to some basic forms of respect. Muslims still operate on this premise of granted authority as concerns religious values. Christianity only has permission to perform religious actions not the liberty to perform them.
