At today's prices, the silver in an old half dollar is worth several dollars. The gold is undoubtedly too thin to be of much value. The gold plating reduces the value to coin collectors, but whoever plated the coin expected to be able to sell it at a premium. There is undoubtedly someone out there who would like it and be willing to buy it at a small premium IF it is in excellent condition (little if any wear).

Yes. Please check your pocket change. ALL U.S. coins have their reverse sides oriented upside-down with respect to the obverse (front) side. There's nothing special about that orientation. Some countries' coins have both sides oriented the same way while others are opposite. It's just a matter of choice.
