This is most likely a failure of the 700-R4 automatic transmission, as it was with mine.
On the 1998 Corvette, the odometer is digital. It should show up digitally right under the speedometer.

Hey Gary==THere is a rev limiter but it should be at about 6000 RPM. I would change the fuel filter and see if that helped. GoodluckJoe -- What else does it do? Does it just stay at that rpm and not shift, or at that rpm does it just bog down? Keep us posted. =) Boost
The plastic gears in the headlight motors are weak. I had the same problem with my 1984 Corvette. You can get a new motor, but it's much cheaper to get new gears. Check out the C4 section at CorvetteForum.com for a how-to on replacing it.
Yes, the mounting position is the same, but the actual mounts are different. Bolt the mounts from your 1975 corvette to your 1996 LT1 engine and it should go right in. The transmission should also bolt right up to your 1996 LT1 engine.
Because the information cable to the dash is disconnected or has a cold solder connection. I know, it happed to me.
You cannot have a horizontal shift in the down direction: a horizontal shift must be left or right!
Pull up the shift boot, on the right rear of the shifter body is a button that you press in and hold while you shift into gear.
