Remove carpet/floor covering
Then there should be screws holding the rubber boot covering the shifter
Remove screws to remove boot
Shifter should be secured to transmission by bolts after removal shifter should be able to be lifted from transmission
Then you can possibly see problem.
Perhaps fork has just slipped from shifter
The automatic trans is a 3 speed. The manual is a 5auto a727 3speed.manual 4speed a833 or 4speed a435. no 5 speeds until 1989.

If your heater control is manual you probably have a cable that has become disconnected at the heater control valve or on the back of the panel. If you have an automatic temp control system you probably need a new temp control panel.
