There are hundreds of different codes that can cause the check engine light to come on. It needs to have a code reader hooked up to find out the specific code. Most auto parts stores will do this for free.
That is the same as the check engine light. You will need to have the system checked for codes to know possible causes.

Check at the battery with a volt meter, Should have over 14 volts when engine is running. If not, possibly have to replace the alt. or check all the wires.
a plug misfiring would cause the rough idle and check engine light or if u changed the plugs and wires u could have put the plug wires in the wrong order
First fix whatever the problem is. That alone oughta turn the light off. Otherwise, either disconnect the battery for a minute or so, or remove the 15A EFI fuse #12 in the engine compartment fuse box for a minute or so.
With a scan tool or by unhooking the battery.

That is exactly what it is suppose to do. This allows you to check and see if the lights are working properly. If they did not come on and then go off when you start the engine, you would never know if the bulbs were working properly.
