this can be caused by a worn nozzle or worn electrodes or both. You should have both replaced
It is most likely the mass air flow sensor that is going bad. I had a similar experience and replaced the maf and that did the trick.

Would like more info such as the year, make, model, engine and if it is back firing through the throttle body (or carburetor) or the exhaust and at what point does it back fire (accelerating, decelerating, cruising, etc).
If it backfires while you are driving, the intake manifold bolts may be loose or the gasket may need to be replaced. If it backfires when you turn off the ignition, the fuel mixture is a little on the rich side.
you can check the catalytic converter it may be plugged and cause it to backfire through the carb
Normally it will be noisy. You may also experience hard starting, engine backfire, and poor performance if the chain has jumped a tooth. Chains normally last the life of the engine and are replaced during a complete overhaul.
Not definite, but possibly wrong timing when reinstalling cams and chain and heads, etc. other option is wrong spark plug wiring. spark plug wires on the wrong plug!
There are many things that can cause this issue. It could be that the timing is not set correctly or that the timing chain or belt is stretched causing the car to be out of time.
ide have to say it has somethin to do with the gear that goes from the cam to ur distributor
have found the problem..the computer was not getting ground to complete the circut..
it turns out the exhaust rocker was broken, replaced it and now it runs fine.
