Mexico revalued its currency in 1992 due to severe inflation. "New pesos" were issued to replace the then-current ones at a rate of 1000 to 1, so your 20,000 old-peso note translates to 20 modern pesos, or about $1.50 as of 10/2009.

What is the difference between us money and Mexican pesos?

There are large differences in the sizes of the coins, the monetary history and the value. One US dollar is equal to 12 (or so, the exchange rate fluctuates) Mexican pesos, thus the Peso will have higher denominations to compensate. While the US monetary system has only had a couple major disruptions (the end of gold in 1933, end of 90% pure silver in 1964, fiat currency in the 1970s) there have been several hyperinflationary events in Mexico which renders older coins and bills obsolete because the "New Peso" is worth many times the old peso. While in the US all bills and coins are still legal tender (the 1793 large cent is just as valid as the 2013 penny and your series 1935 $1 silver certificate is just as valid as your series 2009 $1 FRN) in Mexico that isn't the case. For example, in 1993 the Mexican government made a "new peso" by stripping away 3 zeroes from the old peso. Therefore, 1000 old pesos made one new peso, so a pre-1993 1000 peso coin would now just be worth 1 peso. This has shaped Mexican coinage, while in the US, coinage sometimes "doesn't make sense" such as why a nickel is much larger than a dime and why a penny is larger than a dime (the answer is that prior to 1965 all US coinage was silver and thus would have intrinsic value and so a copper penny was worth less than a silver dime even if the penny was larger and indeed prior to the 1860s the penny was about the size of a half dollar!) there are little historical connections with the Mexican peso so the coin sizes roughly correspond to their denomination. The coins aren't even similar in size and composition unlike Canadian coinage (which mirrored US coinage almost exactly). And so the denominations and the composition are entirely different than US coins. For example the Peso has a 20 cent coin and no 25 cent coin while the US (aside from a brief experiment from 1875-1878 when the US struck a 20 cent coin to circulate at par with the French/Swiss Franc) has a 25 cent coin but not a 20 cent coin. Whereas no US coin is magnetic (aside from the 1943 steel penny) newer Mexican coins are struck in stainless steel. The list can go on and on about the differences between the two coinage systems. But they are different countries with different monetary pasts and thus their coinage looks different.

How can you refinance a home loan if you owe more than your property is worth?

More than likely if your credit is good you can still refinance a home that is valued at less than you owe. You would have to roll the difference in what it's worth and what you owe into the new loan. This would only be beneficial if the new loan had a much lower interest rate than your current loan. You can consult a mortgage professional for further details on your options regarding the situation.

Does countrywide home loans inc still exist?

Something needs to be clarified in this answer. Countrywide Home Loans Inc. and Countrywide Home Loans Servicing LP., are not one in the same and never have been. Bank of America Home Loans Servicing, LP, fka Countrywide Home Loans Servicing, LP was merged into Bank of America Corporation and is now a part of Bank of America, NA. Countrywide Home Loans Inc. is still registered in good standing with the New York Secretary of State with an address in Charlotte, NC., the operating headquarters of Bank of America. It lists 20,000 stock shares valued at $1.00 each. So, technically, the answer is YES.

How would an increase in the value of the dollar relative to the Mexican peso affect the export of US automobiles to Mexico?

Let's assume the currency exchange of the US dollar to Mexican pesos is valued at 1 dollar = 5 pesos. Then, let's say an American car costs 100 dollars. Now, Mexican buyers will purchase such car in Mexican pesos. So, the cost of the car must be converted to pesos, which according to the currency exchange equals 100 x 5 = 500 Mexican pesos. Now, what happens if the value of the dollar increases to... 1 dollar = 10 pesos? As the car made in the US is still valued in dollars, it will now cost 100 x 10 = 1,000 Mexican pesos. The car almost doubled its price! If you are Mexican, you would have a hard time trying to pay for the same car with such an increase in cost. Therefore, when the dollar value increases relative to the peso, American exports suffer as fewer Mexican people and companies are able to purchase products and services with the increases in cost.

No. I don't believe it still is.

How do you cash in peso coins?

You can't. Due to hyperinflation in Mexico the old peso (Pesos issued until 1993) was replaced by the "new" Peso at the rate of $1000 old pesos to the new. So your bill would be 50 new pesos. However, Mexican banks stopped redeeming old pesos for new in 1996 so your bill is just a collectors item and could be sold on eBay and the like, but can't be redeemed for Mexican Pesos.

What is the value of a 1993 one peso Mexico coin?

It's not 1 dollar, it's 1 peso. Mexico uses the "$" symbol to stand for pesos. The peso's value has fluctuated over the last 10 years but it's been around 7 to 10 US cents recently (2011-2012).
