I had the same issue on the same vehicle.I also replaced the tps and ultimately it was the hall effect sensor inside the distributor that had gone bad.$26.99 at O'Reills auto.
The throttle position sensor determines the amount of throttle used when the engine is running at various speeds. If the sensor is faulty, it can be replaced by ordering a new part.
it might be because the idle is low turn your idle up and it should stay running
You might look at the o2 sensor or the temperature sender
Throttle position sensor is located on the side of the throttle body-in line with the throttle shaft. To locate the throttle body, you can have someone repeatedly push the accellerator pedal (with the engine not running) while you look for the moving throttle shaft. Drew
Put a used one on from a running one

Throttle body needs to be replaced
We replaced the fuel filter today and it starts now, but runs very raggedly. It tries to Rev it self up and the tracometer goes back down to 1. Does any one have any suggestions?
Passenger side of engine next to throttle body. It is the senor with the vacuum line running to it.
probably failed throttle bypass solenoid or possibly throttle position sensor
you may look into what is called a throttle position sensor. it basically monitors the position of the throttle and tells the fuel injection what to do. if it goes bad, the car will stall and won't run unless you give it more gas to keep the rpm's up. the throttle position sensor is typically located on the side of the throttle body, right near where the air intake hose joins the engine. they are relatively inexpensive , available at any car parts store and easy to replace.
it should be you T.P.S.. throttle position sensor that does that some time when it goes bad it will idle at higher r.p.m.s replaced it.....
