NOx failures actually mean there is too much heat in the combustion chambers when the gas is 'burning'. Its either too lean or its got too much timing in it. Both will cause a lean (hot) condition. A 1992 has an OBD 1 system, so I'm thinking maybe O2 sensor, verify by doing a scan. The EGR doesn't show up on an OBD1 scan, make sure it works! The manual will tell you how to check the timing.

If there are no other problems and the vehicle is failing the NOX emissions test, it's probably running too lean. Check the EGR valve, fuel pressure and the Oxygen sensor.

An Emission system can include many things depending on the vehicle. The carbon canister/purge valve- prevents Hydro carbon vapors from escaping from the fuel system.
