There are several things that can cause your 1988 Cutlass supreme to stall out while driving down the road. The most common cause is a malfunctioning fuel pump.
Replace the cam timing / speed sensor - about $75.

Its either your cam shaft position sensor or the crank sensor.
Use a code reader to find out why the check engine light is on.
Check idle air control valve on throttle body. Mine had similer problems. A quick fix to get you going should be just unplug and remove spray w/ cleaner to get carbon off spring and cone shaft, reinstall. remember, this is just temporary.

Check the backpressure on your exhaust system. Often, when the catalytic converter fails it can produce this symptom. A local muffler shop may do the check for you for free.
I'd suspect a vacuum leak or a problem with the EGR valve, but if I were working on it I wouldn't replace anything until I've had a chance to check into it further. Clean the air intake mass air flow sensor with carb cleaner. . How can you crank it "in gear"??? You got sensor problems.
on my 97 the cause was the cam position sensors, there are 2 it cost me $500 at the caddy dealer
