Do you have power to the connection that is on the back of the center brake light? the red wire should have voltage to it. If not, it may be grounding out somewhere.

This is most likely caused by a tail light being broken/out. The rear center high mount (middle) has three bulbs (hard to tell one is out when just two). You can also check the brake fluid. You did not specify what year the 300ZX is. If it's a 1985, the brake light fuse is in the fuse panel near the drivers left foot, third up from the bottom on the left side of the panel.(should be marked on the inside of the cover ) Hope that solves your problem, or the brake light switch behind the break pedal may need replacement.(inexpensive part, around $7.00 at Auto Zone/Advanced auto.
