Obviously- the spark plugs were not the issue :)
the specified gap for a 99 for explorer is (.054). If you set it a little closer the spark plug will last longer. exp.(.045).

It means it's running rich. Auto Zone will check your computer codes for FREE. I bet you have a bad coil pack, or Bad spark plug / wires .
