Can you open/ unlock the door from the inside? If you can, then the outside (key) lock connector has broken off from the latch mechanism. If none of the handles or locks work, your latch mechanism is probably gummed up inside... meaning you will have to slowly pop the door fascia off (working with the seat in the way, etc. not fun) and try not to crease or break the plastic until you can expose the latch mechanism near the top rear of the door (make sure you remove the pull handle in the middle of the door- two star drive bolts). The lowest portion of the latch you will see first should be a horizontal slide with a vertical bar that moves forward and back insideit (pinned together). The vertical slide should be pushed all the way rearward, and try the interior/ exterior handle (helps if you have a friend working the handles, the plastic will still be in your way). Use some WD-40 to loosen things up a little, and kepp moving it, it should unstick and then you can work on the door easier when its open.

The main difference between Wrangler Sport versus X is that the Wrangler Sport has full doors. The X has half doors.
I have a 91 Wrangler with full doors. First close the window on the door. Now remove the inside door vinyl panel. The handle is attached from the inside, as you can see. Removal and replacement is obvious from this point.
They didn't make a 1996 Wrangler...
