You have to take off the front end of the engine, as if you were replacing the timing belt and water pump, huge effort for a thermostat.

The water pump just below the top timing belt cover, right side of the vehicle. Not much space to work in, but I just replaced one while I was replacing the timing belt. To the left of the water pump is the thermostat housing; where your engines thermostat is located. I also replace the thermostat while I had the timing covers (top & bottom) removed. Rick

Replacing the thermostat in a z isn't an easy job. The front part of the engine must be completely removed. Usually when you replace the thermostat you might as well replace the water pump and timing chain assembly. The step by step instructions can be found easily online at many sites.
