1996 Mazda protege sputters and dies when coming to stop if i shift into neutral when i start to slow down and keep engine revved i can keep it from dying. works fine as long as i have my foot on gas?

I had same problem, turned out to be an oxygen sensor i think.... tried new ignition cables and coils first, helped but didn't solve it....
