Speedometer is ran by electronic sensor on rear end. Odometer is ran from speedometer. If both don't work problem is sensor. If speedometer works sensor is okay. If speedometer works and odometer does not problem is in mechanical parts (gears) of of odometer and has to be replaced. Can get used from eBay (search for speedometer or odometer, is one unit) or take to dealer.
If the speedometer and odometer doesn't work I would suspect the VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor) is faulty. If the speedometer doesn't work but the odometer does, I would suspect the gauge cluster is at fault.
The gauge has failed.
you need to change the speedometer cause if your odometer is counting then speedometer should be working too. make sure your speed gear its working its in the side of the transmission The odometer and speedometer read off of the same signal. If one works, the signal is ok and the other gauge is bad.
1. fuel gauge or gas gauge 2. RPM gauge or tachometer 3. Speedometer or Speed Gauge 4. Oil gauge 5. Odometer 6. Electrical gauge 7. Temperature gauge
There are certain car gauges which are mandatory to have in a dashboard. These gauges are the speedometer, the temperature gauge, the fuel gauge, the tachometer, oil pressure gauge, charging system gauge, and odometer.
If both odometer and speedometer are not working I would blame the vehicle speed sensor. If just the odometer isn't working the gauge cluster assembly needs to be replaced with a reconditioned one.
check the vss located on the tailshaft of the transmission for the speedometer issue the odometer is figured out based on the speedometer also so it will quit as well. this sounds like either the sensor is bad or a short in the wire from it The cord for the speedometer came undone from the transmission or the gauge cluster is bad
Cluster means all the gauges and warning lights on a vehicle i.e. fuel gauge, temp gauge speedometer, odometer, oil pressure warning lights etc.
My thought would be that your vehicle is originally from a country that uses kilometers. The Speedometer face plate may have been swapped out but the odometer wasn't converted. One mile equals 1.6 kilometers, hence the difference you're recognizing.
Your rpm and odometer sensor were probably busted.
The gauge is part of the instument cluster ( the part with the speedometer ).The gauge is part of the instument cluster ( the part with the speedometer ).
First I would try replacing the cable(s). If that didn't work, I would try replacing the gauges themselves. Good luck!! :^) The odometer/speedometer are not cable driven, they are electronic from 1986-1993. There are two small plastic gears in the gauge itself that become old and brittle. When they lose a gear tooth, the gauge will stop registering. The gears are available through Ebay sellers and several online vendors. The speedometer uses an electronic sensor on the rear differential. It could be anything from the sensor, wiring or the gauge itself. The odometer may be related. If the speedo won't go, obviously the odo won't either. There is an odo kit available from IPD.
