1996 sunfire 2 2 Liter Speedometer has stopped working but will kick on now and then When it's working the Check Engine indicator lights up and sometimes the engine will sputter Any ideas?

Might be the speed sensor. We figured out the problem with the speedometer not working. it turns out the brainiacs at General Motors installed the computer without protecting it from the elements. The computer was corroded along with the wires. Luckily the computer was covered under a recall that was on sunfires...and I had to pursuade GM to pay for the wires to be replaced as well... Hopefullly this helps someone who might be in the same boat

If both the speedometer and odometer stopped working it is probably the speed sensor in the transmission gone bad. If only the speedometer quit you may have to replace the dash cluster with a reconditioned unit.
