1998 Mercedes Benz E320 the ignition key will not turn. What can be the cause?

mines done the same thing, i have the smart key it would not unlock the doors or open trunk, went and bought another key from dealer only taking a chance because i new it was not sending a signal to unlock my doors even after changing batteries put the new key in the switch for two to three hours to let car computer undate date it because even though they use my vin number or what ever to pre program it ,it still would not work or turn my switch when i first put it in but after talking to mech i left it in the switch for 2 or 3 hours and bamm the door locks and car starts fine now.

I think your answer is not realy clear ! With out Mercedes Benz technition program the key ,and you said just leave the key in ignition for 3 hours ,and everything is working well ,this is incorrect answer ,I hope you provide the right direction to the public right information .Thank You !
