You definitely will need a mechanic, it is very hard to work on because its kinda between your engine and your transmission.
It depends on your level of mechanical skill. If you're the type of person who has replaced a transmission, or cylinder heads or an engine in the past, and still have the tools to do so, then you can probably handle it. If you don't know what any of those things are, or where and what your transfer case is, then you'll likely want to employ a mechanic (no offense).
