First start the car then pull off the positive on the battery if the car dies than you need a new alternator if the car keeps running u may need a new battery.
A word of caution, testing an alternator that way can cause damage to the alternator. The alternator needs power to make power unlike the old generators from the past.
Do you mean that the interior lights dim, when the ignition key is turned? This usually indicates a dead or discharged battery. Batteries can be notoriously temperamental at this time of year, the temperature of the electrolyte is critical to their function. A cold or chilled battery, will not provide as much power as a warmer battery. Checking items such as Drivebelt Tension, Electrolyte levels, terminal cleanliness and security, are more important at this time of year, when temperatures are low. Initially, you should try recharging the battery, using a battery charger, preferably indoors where the battery can warm up quicker. Normally Trickle-charging the battery for about an hour or two, should be sufficient to start most cars. Although if you have an old battery, it may be better to replace it. **IMPORTANT** Always check and balance the electrolyte levels BEFORE charging, otherwise the battery can be damaged.
a Bad Gauge, the reostat on the sending unit, a bad ground at the sending unit are the first thoughts that come to mind. Pukenstein@aol.com I don't follow how the battery is relavant as stated below. check the battery aslo...
Check the temperature sensor
check the fuse and check all tail light , do not assume all light s are good
Fuel Pump Fuel pump is a possible culprit. It can also be a clogged fuel filter or defective coil, etc. You need to determine what is missing of the 3 things needed for the engine to run. Fuel, Air, Spark. Once you do that you will know where to look.

The battery size for a 1987 Grand Marquis is a 4.6L. It is important to always check to make sure you have the correct size battery when you are replacing you battery..
Check the battery.
Two possible reasons. One, the Alternator is bad and two, the battery has a dead cell in it. Advance Auto Parts offers free testing on both.
My DIC for my 2000 gtp would flicker then go out. On start up it would work then go out, eventually it went out for good.I changed the ignition switch, battery, checked all the wires i possiblly could under the hood and nothing.Changed the altinator, but was not the problem.I took it in and quality electric hooked a wire off the altinator and bypassed something ,not exactly sure what he did but it was not much.Check the altinator wires .He charged me 60 bucks.
check your battery conecions ,check your grounds.(trace both) check voltage on thaT battery check your ignition switch.check the junction box. try using someone else battery(just to make sure)
I just had this problem on a jeep and it is either the idle is too low or the altinator is bad
Then something is on pulling power from the battery. Check all lights and relays.
how do i change the battery in my grand am gt how do i change the battery in my grand am gt
A charging system failure. You drove it on battery power only and it eventually went dead.
First, check the battery terminals. If there is a lot of corrosion you might just have a poor connection. 2nd, with the engine running, check the battery voltage.
Alternator may not be charging the battery sufficienty Test with a voltmeter A fully charged battery should read approx. 12.8 volts without engine running Should read approx. 13.8-14.2 with engine running
