Mine did the same...it was a cracked manifold gasket..pretty common problem with these vehicles.

Yes..Sometimes you have to check the meter and strips which may have an effect on the reading...I had a reading that was unusual for me...I checked it with another strip and the reading was more the range I was expecting

I was having the same problem with my 99 explorer. What I discovered was that the overflow tank for the radiator was empty and was causing a false reading by the temp gauge.
