I had the same problem. I think it is due to wearing of the internal part of the door mechanism. The handle on the inside of the door will open it. I removed the door inside panel and can see the mechanism but I cannot figure out how to remove it just yet. The window slide rail is in the way. The mechanism is connected with four linkages, the top lock plunger, the door handle rod, the door key rod and the solenoid that actuates the whole thing. The solenoid is pulling but it can't pull hard enough to overcome what is worn. The key also does not overcome it. The door handle will. This is all I know yet.
You should be able to get in the Explorer , lock the doors if you wish , and then start the vehicle . That's what I do on my 1995 Explorer XLT
you have top use the factory remote or unlock the driver door with the key.
you can lock the driver side door on my 2001 ford explorer sport but it wont unlock with key nor key pad you have to go through passanger door
First unlock and open the hatch, the horn alarm is now disarmed and you can unlock the driver side door.
If the key starts the car and you just need to program remote. I just bought a 2000 beetle and had this same problem. Just unlock the rear hatch and lift it up, then unlock driver door with key and push either lock or unlock and it will program the remote to lock, unlock, doors rear hatch and arm alarm
If you are referring to your power door lock on the driver's door, I know that on my 1995 Explorer XLT, in the jack storage compartment there are relays for driver door unlock/all door unlock/all door lock/ and two more relays for interior lamps and trailer park lamps.
Try turning the ignition on and off about 10 times until the door locks, lock and unlock, then lock with the remote done.
put key in ignition turn to first notch and press the remote either open or lock
push door open on remote, or unlock driver door with key.
Unlock the driver door with the key or use the remote.
# Sit in car, doors closed. Electronically unlock all doors using the power door unlock switch on the driver's door. # Insert key into ignition switch and turn from OFF to ON 8 times within 10 seconds with the 8th time ending in the ON position. (5 times on some models) # The doors should lock and unlock by themselves to signal programming mode. # Using your remote: lock the doors.
