Mine does the same thing. Is it a cd-rw? If it is, the stereo has a really hard time reading them. Mine does that too. Is it a cd-rw? If it is, it will have a hard time reading it.

you have to take out the stereo and it is usually on the barcode on it. It is a 10 digit code and usually starts with the letters HS, HA, HC.......
www.crutchfield.com they come with dash kit and wire adapters at no extra cost. A big plus!
If you don't know how, pay someone to do it. You need a wiring kit from a install store for your '97. Then you need to buy a '03 or newer, old tibs suck.

run the driver cable from the mult changer in the bot of the car, running it underneath the carpet and out at the dashboard. Use maskin tape to hold it in place underneath the carpet in the car. Connect the driver cable into the back of the head unit (radio part) abut ensure you have measued where your old stereo was in the dashboard to ensure the new stereo fits.
It is easier to buy a harness tha fits the factory harness in one side and in the oher gives you like 6 inches tip peeled cables ad it gives you the correct codes in your new cables, it cost like $5 and it is the easiest way to work with the stereo since you don't have to cut any cable. you can find it online at eBay or any stereo store, I have bougth my at pepboys.Excuse my English.
you need to pop out the frame and unscrew the radio. You will need a wiring harness for an after market stereo.
