For me, it was a problem with the oxygen sensor. Disconnect your battery and let your car sit overnight. Then re-connect your battery and drive around for 100 miles minimum. If the check engine light does not come back on after 100 miles, then consider the problem fixed. I did this and my car passed inspection after failing the first time because of its initial emissions reading. It's likely a computer glitch that's easily overcome.
For what it's worth, my 01 Camry has a TRD/Kazuma Supercharger installed, which likely contributes to the problem. Do yourself a favor. If you have a supercharger installed, don't put anything but Super Unleaded gas in it.
A check engine light is a problem with the emissions being detected.
Take your car to Autozone, they check all those codes for free and tell you what they mean.
