Engine, connected to the gearbox via the clutch and final drive through a differential to the drive wheels
The differential is an assembly of gears located between the drive axles. It's purpose is to allow the drive wheels to move at different speeds while maintaining power to both. This lessens tire wear and improves handling.
blown transmission
The drive train of an automobile would consist of whatever makes the vehicle move such as engine, transmission, driveshaft, differential(s), axles and so on.
The wheel with the good drive shaft will not move the car. The differential in the trans-axle will always send power to the axle (wheel) with the least resistance. There for the side with the broken shaft will be the axle that turns.
Serious. If it is bad enough the vehicle will not move.
sounds like differential trouble and possibly transmission trouble its really hard to give a proper diagnosis without actually physically inspecting.
I had the same problem with my 2003 Sierra. At the base of the wiper there is a plastic cover over a bolt. Take the cover off and tighten the bolt until snug. Make sure the wiper is all the way down before tightening.

Durango will not move from park to drive?
the expansion of ignited gas in the piston cylinder of the engine turns the cam shaft, which drives the drive shaft which is ultimately hooked up to the wheels through a transmission and differential (rear wheel drive), or a trans axle (front wheel drive). this explosion of gas happens hundreds of times a second to produce sufficient rpms.
