tighten hose clamp or replace gasket on thermostat housing
The hole in the block next to the thermostat housing is the water pump weep hole. If coolant is coming out of that hole, the water pump has failed.
You unbolt the housing that the upper radiator hose hooks to. Remove it and remove the thermostat underneath. Clean off any old gasket, install new thermostat and gasket. Install housing. Fill coolant, warm engine and check for leaks.
Buy a new housing....not that expensive
Unbolt the thermostat houseing remove the old thermostat clean all of the old gasket off of the housing and the inlet put on new gasket and new thermostat also recommend flushing the cooling system re torqur the thermostat housing bolts to the proper torque and run the motor check for leaks.
Drain about 1 gal of antifreeze from radiator Follow top radiator hose to housing at engine Remove housing and observe how thermostat is installed in housing Clean housing and engine where it mounts Replace thermostat and gasket Tighten bolts on housing securely and evenly Refill radiator slowly to prevent an "air lock" Start vehicle and check for leaks Run to normal operating temperature and re-check coolant level
A crack near or on the thermostat housing can cause a coolant leak in a 1996 Grand Marquis. The thermostat housing is located near the manifold on this vehicle.
Should be located in a removable a housing at the engine end of the upper radiator hose Drain about 1 gallon of coolant from the radiator Remove this housing Note how thermostat is installed Clean both surfaces Replace thermostat and gasket Re-install housing Start engine and look for leaks Run engine to normal operating temperature with heater on Re-check coolant level
follow the top radiator hose to the engine. that is where your thermostat is. you will have to drain the radiator, remove the engine side of the hose and remove the thermostat housing to access it. remove thermostat clean mating surface of housing and engine, install thermostat, install housing, secure radiator hose, fill with coolant. start engine and check for leaks.

check thermostat. check engine fan coolant sensor possible locations radiator or thermostat housing. check electric fan working
Best done when the engine is cool.. not right after a long drive.. Follow the top radiator hose to the thermostat housing (dome).. undo the 1/2 inch bolts lift off dome.. remove thermostat.. fit new thermostat and gasket as per instructions.. replace dome and bolt it tight.. check for leaks. If you still have a overheating problem replace the temperature sender unit which should be near the thermostat housing.. it looks like a big nut with a 2 wire plug in it.. :)
