No particular number of wise men are mentioned. People have just assumed it from the three types of gift mentioned. Neither does it say they came to see him in the manger, but he was possibly a toddler by the time they arrived. Also their mode of transport is not mentioned. The other ideas commonly associated with the wise men are traditions that have grown up around them. Here's the Biblical account of the events:
== "1Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, 2Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him... 8 And he [Herod] sent them to Bethlehem, and said, Go and search diligently for the young child; and when ye have found him, bring me word again, that I may come and worship him also. 9When they had heard the king, they departed; and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was. 10When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy. 11And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense and myrrh. 12And being warned of God in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed into their own country another way."
Depending on your religion, yes. Anyone who believes in Jesus and follows mainly the Roman Catholic religion has heard this story. Whether or not it actually happened is a mystery only living in biblical times would truly reveal.
Matthew's Gospel tells a different story in which the wise men came to see Jesus in a house where Mary and Joseph lived (Matthew 2:11).
Yes they did. They were Magi and likely came from modern day Iran or Iraq. The distance approaches 900 KM. They would have taken 4 to 6 months to make the trip. Later Christian traditions numbered them as three although the Bible does not specify the number of travellers. The Bible says they brought three gifts. They were obviously wealthy enough to travel. In later Christian tradition 'Epiphany' is celebrated as recognition of the Magi visit to the baby Jesus bringing gifts from afar. It was obvious that Jesus was no ordinary baby to them but the long awaited Messiah.
In the Gospel According to St Matthew, wise men followed a star to see the baby Jesus. However, the author of the the Gospel According to St Luke knew nothing of the story of the wise men visiting Jesus, but had poor shepherds visit him instead.
The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, leader of the world's Anglicans, has described the story of the three wise men as nothing but a "legend" and says there is little evidence that they existed.
So we have it on good authority that there were no wise men who visited the baby Jesus. However, it makes a wonderful Christmas story for children. In the context of a nativity play, of course you could portray wise men arriving by camel.
Most Christians believe that wise men visited Jesus. It did not necessarily happen when he was a newborn. It is not mentioned in the Bible what the wise men traveled on. Neither is it mentioned that there were three of them.
The Bible says that exactly three wise men travelled from afar on camels to visit the infant Jesus as he lay in the manger.
There were wise men and they went to see baby Jesus.
the bible says that there were three gifts. not necessarily three men. and yes they did travel from afar and by the time that they got there Jesus was like two. hope this helps
yes, as they all brought gifts 3 gifts so there should of been 3 wise men
not exactly 3 more could of come but they only said about the 3 prezzies so that's why they assume that it is 3
