The surrender of US & Filipino soldiers in the Philippines that were defending the Bataan peninsula from the Japanese in early 1942 was caused by the lack of ammunition & food, not by a lack of resolve or courage. US General Wainwright thought it was necessary because of the inability to be resupplied enough to keep fighting. No one knew beforehand what brutality the Japanese would soon inflict on their POWs. In hindsight, maybe they could have held out a little longer, but surrender or fighting to the last man were the only options left.
When Vicksburg surrendered, more than 30,000 Confederate soldiers and 15 generals fell in Union hands. Furthermore the Federals seized 260 guns, 38,000 projectiles, 25,832 kilograms of powder, about 60,000 rifled Enfield muskets.
At first there were no black soldiers fighting for the union until later on during the war.
The Japanese did not believe that surrender was an honorable thing. They also never signed the Geneva Convention. Because of this, their soldiers preferred death to capture and did not understand why ours did not. They thought the surrender of our soldiers in the Philippines was a dishonorable act and treated the men they captured like they had no honor, often straight out killing them.
The country surrendered and demobilized their military. However many individual Japanese soldiers on islands either did not get the message of the surrender or did not believe it and continued to fight on their own for years after the war was over. The last of these Japanese soldiers finally surrendered in 1974, 29 years after the end of the war.

To stop the approaching Japanese armies, kokoda is right next to the cape york peninsula, a few hundred kilometres away, The Japanese wished to press further south past kokoda in order to capture ports and set up airbases to bombard the Australian coast and possibly support an invasion of Australia. In the end Australian soldiers were on the Kokoda Track to prevent the Japanese advance which they succeeded in doing after months of fighting
The Bataan Death March got its name when nearly 72,000 American and Filipino prisoners during WWII were forced to march from the southern part of Bataan to the northern side. During the march, over 10,000 died due to harsh treatment or hot weather conditions. In 1942 after MacArthur was forced to leave the Philippines because the Japanese had invaded it, Bataan Peninsula was surrendered to the Japanese, and all these soldiers were taken prisoners.
- as troops in north Africa and Europe. - as airmen and seamen. - as soldiers fighting the Japanese. - as Japanese prisoners-of-war.
On April 9, 1942, 75,000 US troops and Filipino soldiers surrendered to the Japanese after 7 months of fighting. These men were denied food, water, and medicine and forced to march 65 miles through the jungle. About 1000 Americans died and 9,000 Filipinos died.http://bataanmarch.com/about-bataan/

USMC Vet informed me that there is no way to have an exact tally of the US Forces who surrendered in battles or skirmishes. The Japanese and the Germans killed many troops who supposedly surrendered and some may really have been captured against their will. The death count of these troops is vague too.
In the final months before surrendering, German soldiers were more likely to surrender or desert due to the deteriorating situation on the Eastern and Western fronts. Japanese soldiers, on the other hand, tended to fight with more tenacity and often resorted to suicidal tactics such as kamikaze attacks in the face of imminent defeat.
