The surrender of US & Filipino soldiers in the Philippines that were defending the Bataan peninsula from the Japanese in early 1942 was caused by the lack of ammunition & food, not by a lack of resolve or courage. US General Wainwright thought it was necessary because of the inability to be resupplied enough to keep fighting. No one knew beforehand what brutality the Japanese would soon inflict on their POWs. In hindsight, maybe they could have held out a little longer, but surrender or fighting to the last man were the only options left.

Why was it unecessary to bombard Japan in 1945?

Japan had a policy of Never Surrender No Matter what. It was necessary first to burn Japan cities from the air, and then to drop 2 atomic bombs in order to force Japan to surrender. If Japan had been invaded in November 1945, it probably would have cost 1 Million Allied lives, and 2 Million Japanese lives! Bombing Japan and getting them to surrender saved far more lives than it killed.
